Issa Rae and Jordan Peele are Co-Producing A Movie Together

A female-identity, sci-fi thriller.

After wrapping the fourth season of the comedy-drama Insecure and receiving eight Emmy nominations, Issa Rae is ready for more. The actress, writer, and producer will co-produce and develop a movie alongside Oscar winner Jordan Peele, titled Sinkhole. Rae may possibly be the starring role of the genre film, according to Deadline (fingers crossed).

Sinkhole is based on a short story by Leyna Krow from her 2017 collection I’m Fine, But You Appear to Be Sinking. It follows the tale of a family who moves into a new house with a huge sinkhole in their backyard. The family soon realizes that the strange sinkhole manages to fix broken things and begin to wonder if it could do the same for a person. According to reports, Universal Pictures wasn’t the only one fighting for the rights of the story, they beat 10 other studios with a low-seven-figure deal.

The project will fall under Monkeypaw’s five-year deal with the major and will be overseen by Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Sara Scott.

The story is set in Spokane, WA, on the street that the writer Krow lives on. “She wanted to explore the notion of female perfection and was particularly interested in the ways society and cultures can promote the concept of women as imperfect or broken,” according to the outlet. “Her story has the trappings of a grounded, psychological sci-fi/horror, but the subplot is a commentary on the human condition through the lens of female identity.” Krow is executive producing alongside Alex Davis-Lawrence from literary journal Moss.

For now, there is no shoot date but based on the juicy details, we know it’ll be worth the wait.
