It Was A Sad F**king Summer for Olivia O’Brien

The purple-haired pop star dropped an emotional micromixtape and announced her 2020 national tour.

While some might reminisce on the warmer months of the year as a Hot Girl Summer, pop vocalist Olivia O’Brien retrospects for the melancholy with two in-your-feels anthems on her newly released micromixtape It Was A Sad F**king Summer. After a slew of Instagram posts featuring the mixtape’s colorful throwback imagery, the expressive singer-songwriter dropped two refreshingly genuine tracks “Sad Songs In The Summer” and “Almost In Love”, both of which came with their own music videos, too.

For the mixtape’s first track, “Sad Songs In The Summer”, O’Brien travels back to her childhood where she makes phone calls on an old-fashioned telephone, plays music from a retro CD player covered in star stickers, and lies on her bedroom floor with her first-generation laptop. Listening to music through a set of outdated headphones as her bed slowly spins, the emotive singer ponders over a summertime heartbreak in a melodic cadence. Similarly, for “Almost in Love”, O’Brien taps into her heartfelt emotions and sings on a daybed as she symbolically holds a single rose in her hands. In accordance with the mixtape’s throwback theme, the scene frequently bounces between intentionally edited visuals reminiscent of ‘90s film and photo booth effects. Testaments to the songwriter’s lyrical authenticity, both tracks provide a real insight into O’Brien’s honest psyche.

On top of the micromixtape’s drop, the “Tequilawine” singer announced the official “It Was A Sad F**king Tour” which is set to kick off on February 25, 2020, in Santa Cruz, California. Set to perform across America, this course marks the rising pop star’s second national travels, following her debut headline tour earlier this year. With the tour approaching and future installments to the mixtape on the way, indulge in part one of Olivia O’Brien’s sad f**king summer in her two new music videos below.
