After years of music-making as one half of the electro-pop duo Jack & Jack, Jack Gilinsky is embarking on a solo venture with the drop of his debut single “My Love” featuring Don Toliver and an accompanying, made-at-home music video. The love-on-the-brain track explores Gilinsky’s fortuitous emotions and mellow tenderness atop a R&B-leaning beat, ultimately providing a raw look into the vocalist’s romantic life. 

“The song encompasses two powerful feelings for me,” Gilinsky explains. “One being the feeling of loving someone so much, it doesn’t matter what that person does to you, you will always love them. The other feeling being self-love. If I’m not getting the love I feel like I deserve back from that person, then I’m out.  They are almost conflicting feelings in a way, but somehow they work hand in hand in MY LOVE.” Harmoniously blending two contrasting sensations of love, Gilinsky not only sheds light on the intensity of his romantic encounters, but also the importance of embracing yourself wholeheartedly.

For the single’s music video, Diane Martel served as the lead visionary, directing Gilinsky over FaceTime as he recorded the video himself from home while practicing social distancing. Bouncing between intimate scenes of Gilinsky singing to a love interest under the covers and frames of the vocalist dancing in a monochromatic red outfit, the video showcases both the all-encompassing effects of a love-turned-obsession relationship and the opposing idea of self-empowerment that Gilinksy sings about on the track. 

“I made the entire video in quarantine,” he says. “I shot hours of footage over the course of about three weeks with great help from my parents and one of my best friends Josh Sullivan. Somehow Diane and Jeremy (the editor) found a way to put pieces of that footage together and made it look great. I’m so happy with the way it turned out, but never in a million years did I think it would come together like this. It just goes to show you, you never know when you’re on to something brilliant. You just have to keep pushing yourself and work as hard as you can, regardless of the circumstances you find yourself in.”
