Javicia Leslie’s New Look for ‘Batwoman’ Unveiled by The CW
The actress taking on the titular role makes her debut as Ryan Wilder in a Bat-tastic new costume.
Batwoman is coming back to the CW—and she looks fresher than ever.
Following the July news that American actress Javicia Leslie would play the titular role in season two of the CW series following Ruby Rose’s departure, the new Batwoman suit for Leslie’s character, Ryan Wilder, has been unveiled.
Leslie is the first African American actress to portray a member of the Bat-family, and by the looks of the promo photos, she’s going to be one of the best Bat-persons yet. The Gotham hero looks ready to protect her city in an all-black ensemble with red details and her titular bat symbol emblazoned in crimson across her chest, accompanied by a utility belt, arm shields and a full-blown cape. And, of course, you can’t forget the most important part: the signature sleek bat mask, covering the upper half of her face.
“I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman—it’s her style, her swag, and her moment,” said Javicia Leslie in a statement. “I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”
Not only did the CW nail Leslie’s Batwoman appearance, but the promotional photos for the character, too. Previous teaser photos had been released by Leslie back in September, only hinting at the bat mask and fiery red hair.
In new images released by the network, Leslie (as Ryan) stands tall, proud and powerful against a moody and ominous backdrop, ready to take on whatever villain terrorizes Gotham City next—a true superhero.
“As Ryan embraces everything that makes her special, she adjusts the suit to fit her physically and figuratively,” said executive producer Caroline Dries in a statement. “This meant creating a new body design and new cowl that was undeniably a statement that screamed ‘powerful.’”
