Junya Watanabe’s Fall/Winter 2021-22 Collection Is All About Rock Attitude

The COMME des GARÇONS designer brought out multiple layers, combinations, and collabs for this set.

Rock fashion is stronger than ever – at least if it’s up to COMME des GARÇONS designer Junya Watanabe. For his latest Fall/Winter 2021-22 collection, he channeled a fierce rock attitude through creations that blend multiple patterns, textures, bright colors, and collaborations with the likes of Versace and Levi’s.

It all starts with the set-up: the “Immortal Rock Spirit” featured a catwalk arranged to look like an arena rock concert, with models stepping in like true rockstars – another reminder of an era we truly long for. The designs carry an androgynous flair, with mostly oversized creations – a special nod goes to an extra exaggerated broad shoulder jacket.

Signature Versace patterns are sewn with pieces of plaid, animal print, and floral fabrics, along with fur details. The collection features looks inspired by iconic rock acts such as Aerosmith, The Who, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Kiss, and more, with logos printed on re-constructed shirts, sweaters, and jackets.

Another highlight is the “bat-like” winged designs, which include an outstanding long black ensemble. One of the creations deconstructs the classic Levi’s 501 jeans, now sewn back as a skirt with light fur details.

In footwear, the story couldn’t be more fitting: bulky strap boots featured in shiny black, white, and metallic red. Accessories include knit winter hats with ear flaps and a mohawk-looking structure and a horned cap reminiscent of the one AC/DC’s Angus Young appears wearing on their Highway to Hell album cover.
