There are few things more iconic in fashion than the Snow White ponytail and dark specs of Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld knew this.
“I am like a caricature of myself, and I like that. It is like a mask. And for me, the Carnival of Venice lasts all year long,” he once said.
Now that the MET Gala, one of fashion’s most anticipated events, is not only among us but also shaped in the likeness of his legacy, it’s only appropriate that the icon gets commemorated. What could be more fitting to celebrate the legendary Lagerfeld other than a doll?
That’s why the MET designed a Karl Lagerfeld Kokeshi doll by Lucie Kaas, a Danish company.
Let’s get one thing straight; Lucie Kaas’ Kokeshi dolls aren’t your average doll. Hand-painted and carved from wood, these Japanese dolls are precisely made in the image of creative pioneers. The collection’s artist Becky Kemp designs them based on modern icons, including Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Donatella Versace, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, Anna Wintour—the list goes on.
Inspired by geometric expression, Nordic aesthetics, and Japanese illustration, her rendition of modern legends is imbued with equal parts fantasy and vibrance, bringing her creations to life. Whether you’re a Kokeshi collector, fashion savant, or Karl-connoisseur, the Karl Lagerfeld Kokeshi doll is worth a second glance.
The Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, will open on May 5th, 2023, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Showcasing works from Lagerfeld’s tenures at Yves Saint Laurent, Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his own label, the exhibition will offer viewers a peek into the legendary designer’s creative process.
The Karl Lagerfeld Kokeshi doll is now available in small and large sizes to purchase at the MET store and on its official website
