The Pokémon Company will be celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, marking the release of the very first games in 1996. The beloved franchise plans to embark upon this celebration with a chief focus on music, and they have one particular artist in mind to champion their efforts.

Katy Perry is the headlining “premier collaborator” for the yearlong music campaign, which will feature fan-driven activations and installations to celebrate the landmark anniversary. The campaign was announced in a press release by The Pokémon Company International. “In Katy Perry, we see a kindred spirit to Pokémon, whose world is bright, fun and uplifting,” said Colin Palmer, vice president of marketing.

Perry is known for her vibrant and colorful aesthetic, one that should mesh well with the world of pocket monsters. “Pokémon has been a constant in my life from playing the original video games on my Game Boy, to trading Pokémon TCG cards at lunch, to the adventures of catching Pokémon on the street with Pokémon GO. I’ve even visited the Pokémon Café in Japan while on tour!” she said in the release. “It is an honor to be chosen to help celebrate a franchise that has given me so much joy in the last 25 years, and to be able to watch it evolve in the ways it’s provided that kind of electric joy for the kids in my life and around the world.”

The Pokémon Company announced the launch with a live-action video that featured a “Mouse Trap”-like set-up of various Pokémon merchandise that blazed through highlights of the franchise’s time with anime, video games, applications, and several other forms.
