Spanish V: If you had to pick just one, what singular message do you try to express with your work? What are you trying to tell people?

Fernando Albaladejo: I consider the model as that person who transmits through his image. It seems magical to me to be the mediator between the photographer and the viewer.

V: What is something that you feel is missing in today’s society?

FA: We live in a semi-virtual world. Our head is between the real world and the cloud (digital world). The same is happening with the image; we are taking it toward the virtual world, thus losing consciousness of its scale and with the danger that the viewer will not identify with the message.

V: Do you believe that Spain is more popular of a creative destination today than it was five or 10 years ago?

FA: I’m convinced! What characterizes Spain is the spontaneity of all its people, and I am convinced that this way of being has greatly influenced its imaginative and creative side.

V: How has COVID and the ensuing lockdowns shaped you personally and professionally?

FA: COVID has been a hard blow for everyone. But even so, I have tried to continue doing my normal life, overcoming the complications due to its restrictions, but trying to affect my life as little as possible.

V: What parts of Spanish culture make you feel proud to be a part of it? Is there something that you’re noticing about the next-generation of Spanish talents that’s got you excited?

FA: Spaniards are united by good vibes and enthusiasm to do the things that amuse us with our friends, like go to the beach, the mountains, play sports, and to the bar.

V: What does the future of Spain look like to you? How do you see the country changing and growing in the next few years?

FA: In Spain, there is a lot of talent that has had to leave the country in order to develop and thus be able to grow. Even so, being able to work in Spain makes us feel much more comfortable and proud. In my case, I am fortunate that the fashion industry is gaining strength every time, and I hope that in the coming years it will be possible to better retain talent from home.

V: How were you discovered as a model?

FA: I was discovered by my current agent at the gym in my town. And a couple of months later I did my first modeling job for Calvin Klein in New York. It was an unimaginable experience. I was very lucky to work the first two years of my career with Olivier and Willy, who from day one gave me all their trust. It’s surprising that they gave it to a 16-year-old boy who had never done a photoshoot and still treated him like one of the family. I will be eternally grateful.

V: With the modeling industry ever-evolving, what do you see that has changed for the better?

FA: Awareness about sustainability has been increasingly integrated into the world of fashion. I hope this way of thinking is maintained.

V: As the world reopens, what is next for you? What are you most excited for?

FA: I want to do what I want, without worries or anything that prevents us from doing the opposite.
