This year, there was perhaps no announcement that shook the fashion world to its icy core more than the news of Hedi Slimane succeeding Phoebe Philo as creative director of Celine. Back in 2009, there was perhaps nothing that shook up the entire world more than the arrival of Lady Gaga, a woman that continues to shock and inspire in various ways.

So it made so much sense when Gaga took to The Lourve last night (and Instagram early this morning) proudly donning Slimane’s first design for Celine. The classic black leather handbag has a wide, boxy form with sleek gold fixings, a nod to the designer’s S&M inspirations that still retains the French house’s minimal-chic aesthetic. A closer look at the bag reveals the signature Celine logo on the buckle and Gaga’s initials monogrammed onto the extended tassel.

The designer and the artist have been longtime supporters of one another, dating back to 2009, when he photographed her iconic album covers for The Fame Monster.  Gaga was the first to wear Slimane’s designs for Saint Laurent, and the first to wear a piece from his final couture collection for the brand. His motivation of “music, youth, and sex” in his designs go hand-in-hand with the superstar’s most prominent motifs of her career, and is expected to carry over into his work with Celine, as it did with his heralded re-invention of YSL.

Of course, we really won’t know where Slimane will take Celine until his highly anticipated debut show in September during Paris Fashion Week. This very well may be the only sneak peak we get into the collection, but it’s easily the most fitting one we could receive.
