LeBron James Breaks NBA All-time Record

After almost four long decades, history has been made

If you were walking around New York City last night, you know that the majority of pubs and bars were filled with NBA fans (and also those who know nothing about it) waiting for history to be made. Regardless of one’s background or affinity with basketball, Tuesday night’s game–Lakers vs Thunder–brought together millions of people, perhaps capturing the real meaning of sports.

After nearly 39 years, Lakers forward LeBron James was set to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s N.B.A. career scoring record. With only 36 points needed to pass it, James was destined to reach what had been considered an impossible task for decades. The long-awaited moment came in the final seconds of the third quarter of the game. Smooth and unexpected, James hit a 2-point basket and officially became the new all-time leading scorer. The never-before-seen celebration that took over the basketball court left many of LeBron James’s fans moved. The game stopped to honor the all-time champion, who was joined by family, friends, colleagues, and many A-listers celebrities–Jay-Z, Usher, and Denzel Washington–who were sitting courtside to witness the historic moment.

“If I was the GM of a franchise that was starting up, and I had the number one pick, I would take me. But that’s just me, because I believe in myself,” King James, the kid from Akron, Ohio said last night, giving each of us a great lesson. February 7th, 2023 is a day to remember. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar officially passed on the torch to James with a hug–a sportsmanlike gesture that can only become an example for many to follow, within and outside of a sports ground.
