Most of the time, checking a box on an online questionnaire is an instantaneous task. But not for Lil Miquela, the virtual Internet sensation. Part influencer, part cipher, the 19-year-old humanoid exists to defy category. But like any flesh-and-blood social media guru, she needed to cop a ticket to Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw music festival in Los Angeles.

In a new film entitled #ROBOTPROBLEMS, this seemingly mundane transaction becomes an existential labyrinth. Confronted with the “I’m not a robot” checkbox, Miquela sees her chances at seeing the likes of Billie Eilish, Earl Sweatshirt and SZA slipping away.

The film, which is 17 seconds long and premiered recently at Giphy Film Festival, marks Miquela’s debut as a film director—one category that she seems more than ready to check off. “I hope Wes Anderson and Ava DuVernay aren’t, like...TOO shook right now,” she wrote on Instagram. “Lmk who should play my love interest when this becomes a full-length, Oscar-winning movie.” Academy, take note: In 2019, robot representation matters.
