To celebrate the arrival of Chanel’s Cruise 2020/21 collection in boutiques, the French fashion house released a behind-the-scenes film featuring Lily-Rose Depp. The 21-year-old brought us on set as she shared her favorite pieces from the collection and talked about her close relationship with Virginie Viard. Backdropped in France, the irresistible sun-soaked imagery of Karim Sadli served as the base for the short film. Awash in the brilliant red of the sun dropping over the sea, the video satiates the hunger for hot summer nights and blush tweed bikinis. 

Filmed back in June of 2020, the short film features the French-American actress in a fuschia-colored tweed skirt set. “As well as for a vacation, this collection is very easy to wear in your daily life. It’s very wearable and effortlessly chic,” confides Lily. “What I think is really special is that everything is so mix-and-matchable.”

Inspired by the irrepressible allure and effortless glamour of Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sophia Loren who went on vacations on the Italian and French Rivera, Viard used the Mediterranean coast as her muse for this year’s Cruise collection.  The islands, the scent of the eucalyptus, the pink shades of the bougainvillea were the sensory snapshots that birthed the easy-going, effortless designs. Limited by travel restrictions, Viard brought us on a voyage to the Italian isle via the visual poetry of photography and film, a campaign that Depp describes as “effortless, intimate, and spontaneous.” The collection features multipurpose items that go perfectly together, yet can also be transformed into singular looks. Signature round-necked jackets with the unmistakable Chanel checked weave, short and long-sleeved safari suits, and heavily frilled slip dresses are the stars of the show. And of course, the collection could not be complete without the perfect weekend bag or vacation suitcases, which Viard makes an array of. 

Lily emphasizes her affinity for the tweed outfits as well as the little baskets and the sunglasses while simultaneously revealing her admiration for Virginie Viard: “I adore her. She has an elegance and a grace about her that’s very characteristic of the CHANEL woman. It’s evident in everything she does.”
