Christine and the Queens has returned at last. Today, the French pop sensation unveiled a brand new single, "Girlfriend", her first song since her critically acclaimed debut album Chauler Humaine (or Christine and the Queens if you're in the U.S.). The track, written and produced by Héloïse Letissier herself, sees her expand her minimalist electronic sound and delve into deliciously funky grooves, bringing on G-funk pioneer Dâm-Funk to sing and play on the track.

Expanding on the subjects she spoke about on her debut album, "Girlfriend" plays with the ideals of gender and what's expected of men and women. “I initially set out to smash against macho culture and macho men,” Letissier said about the song. “I became obsessed with this idea of the macho man, and still being a woman. What does it mean if I’m this figure, and I’m a woman? Does it make me an aberration? Is it joyful?" Her forthcoming sophomore album is sure to explore more of those deep subjects.
