Lizzo Removes Ableist Word From Latest Track

Lizzo changed a lyric on her new new song, “GRRRLS,” after fans urged her to “do better.”

It’s about damn time! Lizzo announced on Monday that she would change the lyrics in her new song, “GRRRLS,” after receiving pushback for using an ableist slur.

The lyric in question occurs right at the beginning of the song, which Lizzo opens with: “Hold my bag bitch / Hold my bag / Do you see this shit? / I’m a sp*z / I’m about to knock somebody out.”

Immediately after it’s release on Friday, “GRRRLS” was met with backlash, most notably from writer and disability advocate Hannah Diviney. “Hey @lizzo my disability Cerebral Palsy is literally classified as Spastic Diplegia (where spasticity refers to unending painful tightness in my legs) your new song makes me pretty angry + sad,” Diviney wrote on Twitter on Saturday. “‘Sp*z’ doesn’t mean freaked out or crazy. It’s an ableist slur. It’s 2022. Do better.”

Lizzo responded to the backlash, accepting fault for the lyric. “It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song ‘GRRRLS,’” she shared in a statement on Twitter. “Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language.”

Lizzo went on to announce that a new version of the song had already been uploaded to streaming services. The new lyric reads: “Do you see this shit? / Hold me back.”

“This is the result of me listening and taking action,” Lizzo continued. “As an influential artist, I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”

“GRRRLS” is the second single off of Lizzo’s upcoming sophomore album, Special.
