Loewe Channels The Art of Collaging With Fall/Winter ’21 Collection
A statement on reinvention and collaboration, Jonathan Anderson pays tribute to collage artist Joe Brainard with the Fall/Winter 2021 line.
Step into the world of Jonathan Anderson with the Loewe Menswear Fall/Winter 2021 collection, a vivid dreamscape collaged of reinvention and imagination.
With classic clean, sharp Loewe cuts and sleek silhouettes, the new collection is a celebration of rearranging and cutting, juxtaposing prints and jacquards together to form garments made for greatness.
Inspired by the art and collaging of Joe Brainard, the collection is a portfolio of vivid elements being sliced apart and stitched together; tees and jumpers made into sets of three, printed sheets stitched to the lapels of a blazer. Everything where it shouldn’t be, which is exactly the right place for it.
Across the collection, the act of editing and reimagining is apparent. Striped jumpers evoke the grunge era, while mohair knits and bondage stovepipes pay tribute to punk and shaggy shearling recalls hippies. The fabric of time is folded and restitched by Loewe, creating subverted peacoats with loud colors, billowing coats that move with you, leather trousers with bondage detailing, collage prints and matching cardigan and culotte sets.
Each look becomes more complex, more accumulated than before; every garment Loewe presents is a collage in and of itself.
Highlight accessories in the collection include double handle totes in Anagram jacquard and calf, a round bumbag featuring Joe Brainard’s work, suede boots and wallabies and a Puzzlebag with leather marquetry emblazoned with Brainard’s Pansies.
Alongside the Men’s Fall/Winter collection comes Eye/Loewe/Nature, a vibrant and playful collection crafted to be lived in, to be outside in, to be at one with the elements in.
Following Loewe’s belief that the environment is something to be respected and lived alongside as well as lived in, the collection is a play on patchwork and upcycled materials, creating entire garments of compositions of colors, materials and styles.
Outdoor meets vintage luxury meets military chic with the collection, hybridized into functional everyday sportswear and casual contemporary looks. Shapes are fluid and practical, silhouettes made to be seen and at one with the earth.
Standout pieces of the collection include an upcycled, tailored tweed jacket morphed with a sports jacket; a military tent turned into a long, tailored coat; wide and colorful corduroy trousers with collaged fabrics; and upcycled, embroidered patchwork knits.
The collection stresses upcycling and environmental responsibility, with repurposed and reused materials used to produce the collection and reinforce the mastering of the craft and uniqueness of each individual garment.
The culmination of Jonathan Anderson’s inspirations and design proceeds across the collections can be seen in A Show in a Book, a 200-page hardbound volume inviting viewers to step into the world of Jonathan Anderson featuring the works of Joe Brainard.
The publication features rare artworks, comics, and images created in the ‘60s and ‘70s by Brainard, and a foreword by Jonathan Anderson, and is held together by a monogrammed book strap with an oversized white tee featuring images of the new Eye/Loewe/Nature collection—A Show On A Shirt, with A Show in a Book, in a cardboard box.
