This year marks one hundred years of Loro Piana, the Italian luxury brand at the helm of understated elegance and ‘old-money’ allure. In tribute to the House’s centennial milestone, Loro Piana announces its first-ever exhibition, scheduled to run from March 22 to May 5, 2025, at Shanghai’s Museum of Art Pudong.
The retrospective, curated by Judith Clark, offers viewers an immersive glimpse into the House’s legacy, dating back to the early 1800s when the Piana family first started trading wool in Trivero, Italy. Through a collection of archival visuals, artworks and specially commissioned pieces, the exhibition chronicles the Loro Piana family history and heritage, from the company’s establishment in 1924 to its 1941 success as a trusted supplier of premium wool and cashmere textiles during World War II.
As a celebration of the Maison’s craftsmanship, the exhibition will also showcase the Loro Piana world of fibres, fabrics, icons and symbols, detailing the monumental decision of Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana to diversify and expand the company into the luxury market in the ‘70s.
As for the location, China has emerged as an integral force in Loro Piana’s history and growth. Having relied on the country’s herders and communities to preserve the heritage of cashmere, Loro Piana has cultivated a wide range of collaborations rooted in decades-old partnerships. In hosting their first-ever retrospective at the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai, the Maison pays tribute to their long-standing relationship with China.
Designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel ー the Paris-based design firm responsible for other cultural structures such as the National Museum of Qatar, Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Dolce & Gabbana Store in Seoul ー the Museum of Art Pudong’s collaboration with Loro Piana stands as their first time hosting an exhibition with a luxury House.
