Louis Vuitton’s 200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries Lands in New York
The fashion house will revive Fred’s in their celebration of the bicentennial of founder, Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton’s exhibition, 200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries, is arriving in New York after its start at the house’s historic residence in Asnières, France in December, celebrating the 200-year birthday of the founder of the fashion house. The exhibition has made its way through Singapore and Los Angeles before finally touching down in New York.
The collection will be held at 660 Madison Ave in the iconic Barney’s New York building, including a temporary revival of Fred’s, the historically classic New York lunch spot. Louis Vuitton has tapped the original team of Fred’s to offer items from the original menu, celebrating the once-famed New York café.
The exhibition features 200 trunks designed by 200 visionaries to celebrate Louis Vuitton’s bicentennial. Iconic Louis Vuitton trunks have been designed by an amalgamation of creatives, from scientists, artists, athletes, actors, and designers. The list of collaborators boasts Marc Jacobs, BTS, Gigi Goode, Kim Jones/Supreme, Gloria Steinem, Derek Blasberg, and 194 more creatives. The open brief to design the trunks has created a melting pot of activism, design, and artistic exploration throughout the exhibition.
“This project has always been about creativity—a real tribute to Louis’s ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit,” said Louis Vuitton’s Visual Image Director, Faye McLeod. “We get to see how such a cross-section of talents answered the same brief while also taking a moment to appreciate the man himself.”
The historic fashion house has pledged to donate €10,000 in the name of each visionary to one of fifteen non-profit organizations. These nonprofits span the globe, with their common thread being the encouragement of the arts to young people from disadvantaged communities.
The exhibition will be open to the public with free admission from Friday, October 14, through December 31. Guests are invited to reserve a seat at Fred’s which will offer lunch into the late afternoon as well as aperitifs and small bites until 8:00 pm daily for the month of October, with a reduced schedule for the months of November and December.
