Louis Vuitton’s High Summer Collection Finds Luxury in the Ordinary

This new collection turns raffia, denim, and Parisian silk into a wardrobe for summer’s least-expected moments

Sometimes, the best summer moments are the ones that aren’t planned. It’s the spontaneous night out on the town after a day on the beach, or the lazy afternoon spent basking in the sun. Louis Vuitton’s High Summer collection, arriving in stores July 10th, is dressing for the day that doesn’t have an agenda yet.

The season’s material of choice is raffia, though rarely the real thing. A long skirt, finished with delicate ladder-stitching detailing, is knit from cotton ribbon, a crochet-style stand-in for the real material. The same illusion carries into a white-piped tweed jacket and a matching wrap skirt, and again into an exclusive tee with a floral motif made just for the season.

Structure shows up gently everywhere else: poplin dresses with sharp, considered detailing, A-line jersey skirts crossed with Monogram-piped seams. The house’s ultra-light denim returns in a Flower Minigram print, a miniature take on the Monogram flower worked into a peplum top, scalloped shorts, and a zip-front windbreaker, treating denim as a base or a canvas.

Sportiness is another underlying theme, with a striped jersey under the Baby Stripes name, crystal buttons on a cropped tee, silver-tone embroidery on a pair of mini shorts, and a crochet bucket hat, all designed to pair as easily with a terry-cloth jacket as with a Monogram jacquard polo.

Color moves through the collection the way it moves through an actual summer day. The Promenade Parisienne silk squares that illustrate the city’s streets in reversible silk come in combinations for every part of the day: bright pink and tangerine for midday, sand and terracotta for early evening, navy and denim blue for the walk home after dark. The bags follow a similar idea: a Capucines Flowergram in minty, fuchsia, or lilac leather, a Low Key Hobo striped like a beach deckchair, a Side Trunk patched from grained leather and a classic Monogram canvas, and a Nano Speedy from the LV Crafty capsule in Monogram Dune Canvas, finished with a leather marquetry charm. Two singular Capucines pieces push further into craft alone: one hand-painted in tribute to the mosaics of Barcelona’s Parc Güell, the other, Wild Roses, built from tulle flowers dusted in glitter and sequins.

The collection’s one true object of stillness sits apart from the rest. The Louis Boat Trunk marks the first anniversary at The Louis, the ocean-liner-shaped building in Shanghai that houses a store, cafe, and exhibition space. The canvas miniature trunk has a deck lifting on a silver-tone anchor to reveal compartments built for watches and rings. Made from leather and wood, the trunk is meant to last years beyond this summer season, proving that even a collection made around ease is still built to last.
