The remake of Italian cult horror film, Suspiria, is officially in the works, and it will feature the ultimate cool cast of Tilda Swinton, Chloe Grace Moretz, Dakota Johnson, and Mia Goth. The film will be financed and distributed completely by Amazon Studios.

Luca Guadagnino, the Italian director with an eye for aesthetics, is set to direct the film in what will be his third collaboration with Swinton and second with Johnson following A Bigger Splash. David Kajganich was tasked with penning the screenplay based on Dario Argento’s 1977 masterpiece.

The twisted cult classic follows a young ballet dancer, Suzy Bannion, at a prestigious dance academy in Munich. As a series of murders begin to unfold, supernatural elements emerge from within the folds. It is still unclear who will play the role of Bannion, but Jessica Harper, who stars in the original, will reportedly make an appearance.

The original film’s plot is largely overshadowed by its soundtrack, by Italian rock band Goblin, and above all by the intense visuals that look fresh out of a fashion spread. Guadagnino, who has created advertisements for the likes of Giorgio Armani, Cartier, and Salvatore Ferragamo, will surely have no problem emphasizing style over substance.

The revival is a longtime passion project for the Italian director, for who the original made a lasting impact upon watching it at 14. Guadagnino has stated that he will change the location from Munich to Berlin. It will, however, be set in 1977.

Filming starts in October in order to be released next year, uncoincidentally also the 40th anniversary of Suspiria’s release.
