Macklemore’s New Record ‘BEN’ Charts His Redemption Arc

From substance abuse, to fatherhood and faith, the rapper’s new record is his most introspective work yet.

“I’ve always wanted to make an album called Ben,” shares American rapper, songwriter, and Grammy Award winner, Macklemore. In an act of self-realization, the artist’s latest record, BEN, dropped on Friday.

The album features 14 tracks, including the first single, “No Bad Days,” which was released alongside a corresponding music video directed by Macklemore’s seven year-old daughter, Sloane.

“There’s something about a self-titled record. It has an air of voyeurism,” Macklemore explained. In his case, this is certainly true. BEN is the artist’s most introspective, observant work yet. On the album, Macklemore traces his experiences of fatherhood, fame, and faltering at the hands of substances, as well as the joy and pride to be found in healing.

Macklemore articulates his battle with drugs and alcohol on tracks like CHANT, HEROES, and GRIME. In doing so, he charts a path of personal redemption across time and ever-deepening faith. Continuing to use his art and platform to raise awareness regarding addiction and recovery, $1 per ticket to The BEN Tour will be donated to Bridges—Seattle Alternative Peer Group, who mentor and support youth and young adults in recovery.

Beginning his North American tour on September 17, general sale for The BEN Tour begins on March 10 at 10am local time.
