For Maison Margiela’s Co-Ed Spring-Summer 2024 Collection, Creative Director John Galliano presents a narrative surrounding characters Count and Hen. He draws inspiration from a transatlantic voyage by ship and imagines Count’s aristocratic lineage meets Hen’s industrial family, severing the ties between inheritance and transformation.

The message of the collection is an emphasis on how clothing can be passed down from generation to generation, with slight alterations being implied and changing the culture of style.

The collection showcases a technique known as exfoliage, where dresses unveil their inner structure by shedding their top layer, resulting in a relief effect. This innovative approach extends to dresses and shirts through a process called pressage, leaving behind unadorned reliefs, as if they were pressed by the weight of a suitcase. To add a modern twist to the attire, shiny bow fragments and personalized tape embellishments are incorporated.

The collection also dives into the realm of inherited tailoring, with blazers adopting the draping style of mauvais garçons, reflecting the natural movements associated with wearing garments. This creative endeavor features Rorschach cutting and dotting techniques in various pieces, forming recognizable outlines and patterns.

In the domain of outerwear and suits, a fusion of both masculine and feminine elements takes place, resulting in coats featuring sculptural basques and culottes inspired by mid-century dresses. The iconic Tabi brogues and spectator shoes, along with other accessories, undergo reinterpretation to align with the collection’s narrative.

The coats in this collection possess a substantial and voluminous presence, occupying a significant amount of space. Their design emphasizes a robust and substantial silhouette, creating a visual impact that commands attention. Their sheer size and bulkiness make them stand out as statement pieces, adding an element of extravagance to the overall ensemble.
