Maison Margiela Unveils New Haute Perfume Collection

The house celebrated the release of the ‘Scentsorium Collection’ with an immersive experience titled, ‘MOTUS ANIMI’
Coming off an elegant FW/26 show in Shanghai, Maison Margiela celebrated the unveiling of its first collection of haute couture fragrances last week. The immersive experience was designed to evoke an inner exploration of the collection’s central theme: emotions.
In line with the doctrine of deconstruction and reconstruction visible in many of the Maison’s garments, Scentsorium is formulated by examining each of the individual ingredients’ internal structures. Each material is distilled, concentrated, or softened to complicate an otherwise simple set of materials. In essence, the ingredients are separated, processed individually, and reunited into one scent representing the duality of human emotion.
Each of the collection’s six genderless fragrances explores the representation of a dueling emotional state through scent. For Silent Fury, the fragrance representative of anger, notes of spices and leather are mixed to convey a feeling of restrained heat. Tobacco absolute adds a smoky layer to the fragrance, conjuring a burning scent.
“The Scentsorium Collection unveils the untamed essence of the very core of human. We meticulously captured the unfabricated truth of our most profound emotions – their intricate complexity, their opulent richness, and their visceral intensity – by applying the rigorous precision of haute couture to raw ingredients,” said Sandrine Groslier, the Global President of Luxe Fragrance Brands.

Even the bottle toys with concepts of time and inheritance. The rectangular, thick-cut, glass housing is splintered with what appears to be a warp in the flacon. The irregularity is a reference to twentieth-century decanters, conveying a “hand-me-down” sense, as though the bottle had been repurposed several times since its original owner possessed it.
The event titled Motus Animi, the movements of emotion, took place in the Starrett-Lehigh Building, an industrial office space located in Manhattan that the Maison transformed into a six-room walking exploration. With one room per fragrance, each room served as a physical manifestation of the scent’s corresponding emotional state. Audience members passing through were greeted by visual and acoustic installations meant to interact with the notes of the fragrance, making the immateriality of emotion temporarily material.
“With this experience to celebrate the launch of the Scentsorium Collection, we were thrilled to bring together a community of passionate connoisseurs, united by a shared sensitivity to scent and emotion,” Groslier said. “We also redefined the boundaries of haute parfumerie and its expression, translating the intangible into an unforgettable physical reality.”
