Maison Margiela x Gentle Monster Crafts a New ‘Créature’
John Galliano’s new eyewear collection brings together everyday classics and avant-garde frames.
In a change of pace for haute couture house Maison Margiela, this month the Parisian fashion label is dropping a collaboration with popular Korean eyewear innovators, Gentle Monster. For the sunglasses brand, which has previously collaborated with the likes of Heron Preston and Coperni, this capsule collection marks another success in their ever-expanding high-fashion portfolio.
Bringing together signature elements of both labels, like Maison Margiela’s stitch logo and the bold, acetate designs Gentle Monster has become known for, the 11-piece collection harnesses the creative ethos of both brands, offering everything from sporty, futuristic frames to classic oval sunnies in tortoiseshell, black, white, and grey.
Margiela’s beloved Creative Director, John Galliano, has reimagined the Maison’s famous black mask through Gentle Monster’s quirky perspective, creating a butterfly-shaped frame.
Better yet, the capsule has been declared genderless, contributing to the ongoing call within the fashion industry to encourage inclusivity and fluidity across gendered categories.
Dropping worldwide on February 28, the collection will be made available online and in-store at Gentle Monster and Maison Margiela locations, as well as at select global retailers.
To celebrate the collaboration, pop-ups will be held in seven cities around the globe: New York, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Singapore, and London. Prices range from $320-$680 USD.
