Margaret Howell Has Mastered Business Casual Wear and School-Inspired Designs at London Fashion Week

The new collection of womenswear and menswear is preppy and timeless.

Margaret Howell’s Spring Summer 2022 collection of casual and business casual womenswear and menswear is being showcased via appointment on Sept. 17 from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm at London Fashion Week.

Howell’s sense of design has always been inspired by where she’s from—her clothing looks distinctly European, pulling flavors from London street style. Above all, her designs can be described as classic, modern, and sleek. Sticking to neutrals and subtle colors, her clothing is timeless, and with the ability to dress up or dress down any outfit she’s created, they are perfect for daytime wear at the office or nighttime wear when you’re out for drinks with friends.

Sticking to neutrals and light colors in her Spring Summer 2022 collection, Howell designed a variety of sweaters, dresses, coats, blouses, trousers, shorts, and skirts. She also played with denim, and kept on-brand with mostly solid colors and a few patterned garments, clearly valuing comfort and style. The collection is both genderless and fluid, working on any gender, and as a whole, it is very uniform. The models wore white or black socks with black shoes, and some even accessorized with bandanas which elevated the preppy look.

Many of her new designs include layered looks, like button-down shirts under sweaters or large overcoats, paired with trousers. Some of the coats were tightly belted at the waist, whereas others flowed freely. She also designed dresses of a boxier style with a loose fit, one green and another of a multi-colored stripe pattern, some collared, and some sleeveless. Dipping into denim, she designed a pair of jeans with a matching coat for a stylish set, and also a knee-length denim skirt. Her new black knee-length shorts can be worn with a variety of outfits, but look especially good with her forest green cropped coat, and they contrast her dark pair of baggy calf-length pants.

A few looks were school uniform-inspired, with several collared shirt and tie outfits, complete with trousers and a coat. Several outfits included matching coats or tops with the trousers, so they can easily be worn as sets. Some of the best looks included the layered white shirt under the nude collared blouse paired with brown pants, the open sweater vest under the collared shirt with trousers, and, of course, you can’t go wrong with a classic baby blue button-down shirt and striped tie.

Howell’s collection remains classy and on-brand with her previous collections, but it might leave the viewer wondering if she played it a little safe with this collection. Her Autumn Winter 2021 collection featured more patterns, so it would be nice to see more stripes or plaid in her next collection. Regardless, this collection is infinite and stylish, and we can’t wait to see what she does next.
