Mariah Carey Passes Torch to Lil Nas X

Mariah Carey tweets a sweet message to Lil Nas X for breaking her chart record.

America’s most gracious diva quite literally passed the torch to the recently discovered rapper. Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” which features Billy Ray Cyrus, became the longest-running Billboard Hot 100 No.1 single of all time. The young singer’s triumph broke Mariah Carey’s longstanding chart record; Carey had teamed up with Boyz II Men for the 1995 duet “One Sweet Day,” which set the record for 16 weeks at No.1. Later, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s hit, “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, tied Carey and the Boyz with 16 weeks on top. Now, “Old Town Road” has hit its 17th week at the top of the chart, surpassing the megahits. “Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest-running records in music history!” Carey tweeted, following an illustration of her literally passing the torch to Lil Nas X. “We’ve been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!” Lil Nas X immediately responded with the message “Legend” and a heart emoji, alongside a repost of her tweet.
