Creative Director Francesco Risso continues his reign of Marni’s youthful, colorful, and exquisite collections. Often marked by big polka dots, stripes of all different sizes, or a myriad of other patterns, Risso’s collections have struck chords of modern chic and childlike nostalgia.

With the inaugural volume release of Marni’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection, Risso continues this trend, never afraid to layer patterns over patterns, colors over colors. Dresses, overcoats, shirt-pants sets, and lots of knitted mohair lead the collection. Color, of course, is everywhere, but black silhouettes and staples are spread throughout to show how unique a fusion of the two can be.

Boots are the stars of the footwear, from black thigh-high boots with yellow laces, to a red version of the same, to red and black half-calf versions, to knee-high white rain boots, to small black boots with two white stripes. Non-boot options include colorful and fuzzy sneakers and black platforms.

Lots of accessories are used throughout the volume, including bucket hats, sunglasses, knitted hats, and a plethora of bags—some are fuzzy, some are cross body, some are cheetah print, almost all have bright colors and patterns.

Scarves that, at times, are reminiscent of The Lorax—with a mix of vibrant colors and patterns that reach the floor—add a fantastical flair to some of the more tame silhouettes or a whole new layer of liveliness to patterned coats and dresses. Especially the fuzzy-mohair pieces, often with two-tone stripes, feel like something from children’s fantasy books.
