Martin Laborde for Acne Studios F/W ’22

Martin Laborde’s capsule collection for Acne is eclectic and futuristic.

Acne Studios’ latest venture is a print collaboration with artist Martin Laborde as an addition to their Fall/Winter 2022 collection. Laborde, a Paris-born and Portugal-based artist, created a series of collaged/constructed works that are featured as prints on t-shirts, dresses, oversized jersey, and silk scarves. His work features eclectic prints of horses, flowers, and fruit resurrected as surreal paintings.

Standout pieces include a bright green satin dress printed with cutouts of fruit boxes and flowers and a pastel-blue long sleeve roll neck shirt adorned with food and animal imagery. A pair of trousers, a t-shirt, sweatshirt and satin shirt are built for mix-and-match with digital print horse imagery on a fluorescent white fabric. The pieces are baggy-luxe, with plenty of room to play and romp in – evocative of the horses that Laborde encapsulates in his work, and perfect for lounging in late summer days.

Laborde also directed a short film for the collaboration, working with Moni Haworth, LA-based director and actor, on a surreal film. The short film features two models wearing pieces from his collection while playing in the outdoors with goats and visiting a fluorescent-lit aquarium.

When asked about his eclectic, boundary-breaking work, Laborde says his materials are “nothing sexy.” The artist doesn’t follow a particular prescription when it comes to art. He  uses anything accessible or on-hand, from magazines, junk mail, or waiting room publications. “To see my work on textiles and being worn, it’s like how my collages turn something into something else, and now becomes something else again. There’s no mythology, no fidelity, and that’s exciting,” he says.
