Givenchy has just revealed the departure of their current Creative Director Matthew M. Williams, going in effect January 2024. Upon his arrival in June 2020, Williams reshaped the brand’s image and connected the fashion house internationally with a particular focus on engagement in Japan and the United States.
Williams will now fully dedicate himself to the development of his own brand, 1017 ALYX 9SM.
Making a profound impact on the fashion house, Williams has breathed life into the brand with his collections, fashion shows, and noteworthy collaborations with contemporary artists. Under the guidance of Williams, Givenchy underwent a comprehensive transformation, with the product range receiving a modern touch, with additions such as the “U-Lock” jacket and the “Voyou” bag, launched in 2023, quickly becoming must-have items and contributing to the brand’s global reach.
“I would like to thank Matthew for all the energy he brought to Givenchy,” says Renaud de Lesquen, President & CEO of Givenchy. “His collections, resolutely creative and contemporary, have sparked a new dynamic and found their audience. I join everyone who has had the pleasure of working with Matthew in wishing him every success in his next ventures.”
In response to the announcement, Williams reflected on his time at Givenchy, calling it “the dream of a lifetime.” Over the past three years, Williams has honored Mr. Hubert de Givenchy’s legacy while infusing his creative vision into the collections. “I would like to sincerely thank the studio, Renaud de Lesquen, and LVMH for this incredible opportunity,” says Williams.
With his departure, Givenchy now stands at the threshold of a new creative chapter. Until the announcement of a new creative, the brand assures it will continue to embody its bold vision of elegance. The upcoming collections will be crafted by Givenchy’s in-house studio teams, ensuring the continuation of the brand’s significance.
