Ru by Rupal Takes Downtown Brooklyn by Storm for NYFW

At a Galentine’s Brooklyn-based runway show supporting emerging designers, Rupal Banerjee showed off her edgy Indian-inspired streetwear

On Tuesday night, the Ru by Rupal Runway show in Downtown Brooklyn was a high-energy Galentine’s celebration put on in partnership with MEFeater Magazine and produced by MEFAgency in an event that aimed to promote the emerging Los Angeles-based designer. The crowd outside of Brooklyn Studios was abuzz with excitement, all more than happy to be there in support of designer, Rupal Banerjee.

Banerjee has become an emerging designer to watch since she debuted her brand in 2019; known for merging traditional Indian garments with modern streetwear silhouettes. Ru by Rupal takes streetwear designs that are commonly associated with menswear and feminizes them by creating sharper silhouettes, meant to embody the strength of the women that Banerjee takes inspiration from.

The FW23 season marks an edgier push from the brand, with Banejee exploring an intertwining of grunge elements with her Indian culture. The prints that were shown in the collection were made by toying with old family photos as a way for the designer to put a bit of her own lineage into the clothing. Pleated panels in Banerjee’s designs reference the traditional Indian sari, while tough clothing in line with utilitarianism gives other pieces a sense of timeliness, calling to the current surge in fashion for protective dressing.
