Melania Trump sported an ivory Christian Dior pantsuit to her husband’s second State of the Union Address last night. Pairing the suit with a Dolce & Gabbana blouse and nude Christian Louboutin stilettos, the First Lady made a statement, one with a purpose that’s unclear.

Whether intended or not, the pantsuit was symbolic. As her first public appearance since the scandal surrounding her husband’s involvement with porn star Stormy Daniels, Melania Trump stirred up scrutiny with her wardrobe choice. The color worn by Mrs. Trump holds an allegorical reference to the suffragette movement of the 1900s. Hillary Clinton adopted the pantsuit style for her campaign wardrobe during the 2016 election, and many attribute it as a symbol of today's women’s empowerment movement, one that directly defies her husband and his peers. The look was also seen this weekend at the Grammys, worn by Kesha and the band of women who stood behind her as she performed “Praying”, a tune centered around the singer’s sexual assault perpetrated by producer Dr. Luke.

On the other hand, Trump’s decision to go white may be attributed the Democratic Women’s Working Party’s decision to wear all black to the Address, in a similar fashion to what we’ve seen on the red carpets in response to the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements. That being said, Mrs. Trump has been seen in similar attire during her time in the White House, wearing a white tailored Dolce & Gabbana suit during her trip to  Saudi Arabia, and during her first meeting with Israel’s prime minister, where she wore a custom Karl Lagerfeld skirt suit. Whatever it may mean, her look certainly comes with a lot of opinions.
