Michael Kors Resurrects Studio 54 for FW19
Music and passion were always in fashion.
When Michael Kors commits to a theme, he commits. The designer’s Fall 2019 show embodied the best of 70s style as It-models Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Bella Hadid, and more walked the runway in a nostalgic collection brimming with floral motifs, shag jackets, and a perfect dose of sparkle destined for a night of disco. Studio 54 provided the inspiration for the collection, most notably exhibited in a sequined t-shirt dress, a puffer coat, and silk blouses all emblazoned with the iconic club’s logo. One thing is for certain — this collection will make you feel like dancing.
A patron of the iconic disco club himself, Michael Kors recalled his days spent dancing among the glitterati of 70s New York in a press statement prior to previews. “New York was a pit, but we were dressed,” he said. “Studio 54, everyone always talks about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, but the best thing about it was the mix; Nan Kempner next to a street boy.”
At his Fall 2019 show, there certainly was a cast of characters befitting to a modern day Studio 54. Patti Hansen, legendary supermodel of the 1970s, closed the show in in a gold metallic suit, adding even more layers of authenticity of the show’s theme. Unconventional pattern pairings, bold textures, and oversized silhouettes highlighted the collection’s youthful and optimistic vibe, and the fun didn’t stop there. For his final bow, Kors revealed disco icon Barry Manilow in front of a wall of shimmering gold tinsel. The show closed with a performance of “Copacabana,” which had every supermodel bopping and singing along, all before 11 in the morning.
