MILCK Releases Empowering and Melancholic Single, “Gold”

The activist and singer-songwriter transforms painful personal experiences into a magical self-love anthem.

MILCK knows a thing or two about turning pain into power. Her song “Quiet” earned worldwide attention during the inaugural Women’s March for its forceful call to action. Her latest project has that same bravado with added sensitivity. Her new EP, Into Gold, is out today, along with the music video for her song “Gold.”

The EP is meant to reflect the journey of a woman who has rejected familiarity in favor of authenticity. The project launched with the premiere of “If I Ruled The World,” a fiery anthem that’s as optimistic as it is critical, two weeks ago. But not every song on Into Gold is radiant and declarative like “If I Ruled The World.” In “Gold,” listeners are able to glimpse a more vulnerable side of MILCK as she nears the final stages in her voyage to radical self-acceptance. It’s as personal and reflective as it is relatable and inclusive. She asks the listener to see her history, to understand that her actions are the result of a painful and beautiful transformation and offers to do the same for them, imploring her audience to empathize instead of judge. “It took me years to turn these tears from water into gold,” she belts out in the chorus, which captures the universal feeling of the quiet joy we harbor after going through an agonizing experience and coming out the other side better for it. The avant-garde music video for “Gold” gracefully symbolizes these sentiments through dance. In a particularly powerful shot, MILCK douses herself with gold paint, representative of her resilience and a newfound sense of self.

“The more years I live on this planet, the more I find that painful experiences are gifts in disguise,” said MILCK, regarding the video. “Pain is packed with potential– waiting for us to alchemize it into purpose, power, and passion. This video is my and my team’s dedication to those of you who are doing the hard work of turning your tears into gold. I love you.”
