Minnie Mouse AMBUSH—new UNIQLO collection

Toyko-based label, Ambush partners with Uniqlo.

V spoke to YOON, the self-taught designer behind the label, AMBUSH. Ahead of a new partnership with UNIQLO, YOON shared her thoughts about the upcoming collection, Minnie Mouse motif, and Japanese culture.

YOON has always been a big fan and devoted customer of UNIQLO, therefore this partnership was an obvious no brainer. However, the personal relationship grew stronger as UNIQLO became a refuge for the best basic pieces to help the designer with her busy life. YOON still remembers the first thing she purchased from the brand, HEATTECH top, and leggings which remain her current staples for the colder seasons. Despite her own brilliance, YOON’s partner VERBAL was the mastermind behind the name, AMBUSH. She reveals, “[w]hen we first started, we wanted to put out whatever we felt like, so the name AMBUSH fit the flow of our creativity back then.”

Although the Minnie Mouse motif has been featured alongside a variety of designers, YOON still finds the relevance behind the artwork. Minnie Mouse is an icon, and YOON admits the challenge behind not repeating what has been done in the past. As a solution to this problem she, “put together graphics that were a bit more abstract and stripped it down to something more minimal to create the theme ‘LOVE’ with her hand gestures.” With a color pallet of black, red, and white, a mix of pink, mint, and beige were added. The Minnie Mouse color pallet and bright colors lighten up the collaboration for the spring season.

Japanese culture finds an interest in American cultural icons, like the cartoon character featured in this collaboration. YOON explained how American pop culture had a terrific impact on the Japanese post World War II. Further stating, “Perhaps it has to do with the fact that Disney is synonymous with innocence, dreams, and the virtues of a happy childhood that appeals to all of us.” Japanese design has continued to capture the world due to the attention to detail. The designer ends with, “It’s all about the detail.”
