In an age when streetwear is becoming more and more commercial, MISBHV is a breath of fresh air. The Polish label has grown from a small passion project in Poland into something that the Rihannas and Kendall Jenners of the world can’t be without. For their debut catwalk, Designer Natalia Maczek and Creative Director Thomas Wirski decided to host the event in Warsaw’s Palace of Culture and Science. Their decision to show in Poland speaks to the brand itself, which prides itself on the country’s unique aesthetics and history.

To pay tribute to said history, the show opened with a performance put together by Movement Director Pat Boguslawski, which merged elements of the past with the present through techno beats and traditional Polish folk dancing. As for the clothes itself, the SS19 collection was heavily inspired by Polish poster art, inspiring the duo to collaborate with esteemed graphic designer Roslaw Szaybo. The label cast Szaybo’s iconic prints onto various garments throughout the show, most notably the tops and outerwear. “POLISH JAZZ”, which is the name of the collection, was also seen on a host of pieces.

Themes throughout the collection included headscarves and shawls embellished with modern-feeling prints, draping dramatically off of the models’ scalps. Guests and models alike were sporting a healthy dose of yellow nylon. Accessories included leather bucket hats, large hoop earrings, and logo-heavy knee-high boots. There was a beautiful balance between femininity and masculinity despite the models’ genders, which was particularly inspiring for me; in a geographic region where fashion culture is coming to life on a relatively blank slate, kids seem comfortable stepping outside of traditional western norms.

There was an emotional level to the show—not just because it was MISBHV’s first, but because of the overwhelming pride they showcased for their country. International editors left the Palace with a newfound appreciation for Warsaw’s fashion scene, certain that the talent there would eventually warrant another trip down the line.
