At Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2026 presentation, one unlikely item took center stage: the apron. The first look revealed a basic blue variant, but as the show went on, they became more decorative — some were embellished with gemstones. Through the garment, Miuccia Prada sparked a dialogue around women’s work, utilitarian fashion, and personal agency. 

Worn in factories, doctor’s offices, and kitchens alike, the apron is associated with several professions, but remains defined by its functionality. The collection’s varying designs capture its nuance — one is constructed out of leather, another out of black lace. Several feature ruffles, a symbol of femininity and softness, contrasted with tougher fabrics. 

A universal symbol of work, the apron imparts a sense of dignity and purpose on its wearer. In relation to women in the workforce, it represents a stoic determination against adversity. Miuccia Prada explores a history of women’s struggles through the often-overlooked garment, using a range of fabrics and embellishments that make the apron highly visible. In the show’s later looks, functionality takes a backseat, and the garment becomes purely decorative. 

With its complexity, the collection also brings wearability. The aprons look right at home paired with collared shirts, pleated trousers, and even bikinis. Joyful patterns and a bright color palette add levity to somber themes, transforming the garment into not only a reminder of workers’ endurance, but a celebration of it.
