Like everyone else, the fashion world has had to adjust to a new normal that is anything but ordinary. From Zoom meetings to digital events, even the fashion industry is embracing the fact that technology and a degree of extra care might be the conduit to sharing our inspirations, creativity, and collections in the present times. It’s all about moving on with our lives while being responsible.
Considering the recommendations for gatherings are changing every day and the fact that fashion relies on in-person events and interactions, we interacted with model Jamel Harris on his insights to runways returning amidst COVID-19. Known for his passion for African designers and promoting their rich culture, Harris shared that, “there is a middle ground the fashion world can easily exist within, including showcasing talent and keeping models, staff, and audiences safe.”
“I recently walked a live show where every single precaution was taken,” pointed Harris. “This included wearing masks, social distancing, and temperature taking. With a limited crowd, safety was of the utmost importance, and overall the show was a success.” By not letting the guard off the coronavirus pandemic, the fashion industry can still move forward even during these tumultuous times.
Harris shared that while crowds may need to be limited, this is pushing the boundaries of creativity, changing the way we look at and design fashion shows. “Designers are opting for less traditional runway formats like outdoor shows, digital shows, and more intimate and private shows, and it’s fantastic,” he added. “No one says the runway show can’t change, and as we adapt, we are giving the fashion world something much more entertaining than your traditional tent show with a static runaway.”
Harris maintains a positive outlook on the future of fashion shows during COVID-19 and beyond. Fashion has always represented a bright light during difficult times, and as runways begin to return, so will our enthusiasm for what they have to offer. He concluded, “I certainly do not see this as the death of the runway show but a rebirth? Absolutely.”
