Combing through the campaign images of Moncler Grenoble’s newest collection, a Fall/Winter 2024 line of snow-gear staples, it’s hard not to pop online and start building my own little ski capsule. I am not a skier, but when the opportunity arises for an aprés-ski wardrobe that actually keeps me warm (without having to down a drink or two…or three), its too tempting to toss up.
Mario Sorrenti, the contemporary fashion photography legend and beloved V contributor, lends his artistic vision to the Italian luxury house’s latest global campaign. Shot in the Swiss Alps, the project introduces Moncler’s newest global brand ambassador, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen. A World Cup champion slalom skier (for my fellow ski novices the Oxford English Dictionary defines a slalom as “a ski race down a winding course marked by flags or poles”), Braathen flies down the Zermatt’s peaks alongside fellow brand ambassadorsーthree-time Olympic gold-winning snowboarder, Shaun White, and Olympic gold-winning and five-time World Champion mogul skier, Perrine Laffont.
Moncler Grenoble, the snow sport offshoot of the Moncler brand, specializes in technical design, crafting a performance as high as the mountains their models ski on. Sure, they’re stylishly winterized, with their chevron quilted fabrics and long-hair alpaca wool coats, but they’re also so polished, so minimally vibrant, if we didn’t know any better we’d probably be wearing them every time the streets fill with slush, or what we like to call that grey, mushy semblance of snow that falls in New York.
The FW24 collection, which made its debut in a very hush-hush runway show under the moonlit forests of St. Moritz, aims to celebrate the dual ethos of Moncler Grenoble: one as committed to technical performance as it is devoted to the tenets of high style. Made up of garments designed for warmth, comfort, and intensive outdoor sport protection, the high-performance line does not turn a blind eye on the chicer callings of après-ski. Its brilliant technicalityーthink technical fabrics, fully-taped seams, and integrated power skirtsーis balanced out with a thoroughly curated artistic creativity. And thanks to the brand’s innovative weather-proofing manufacturing techniques, fabrics like corduroy and wool flannel, once reserved for warmer settings, are made impenetrable against the glacial temperatures of the slopes.
The womenswear is rooted in delicate refinement, defined by embellishments of ornate folk-art embroidery and meticulous quilting techniques mimicking the intricacies of graphic snowflakes. As seen on modeling muses and V girls He Cong and Yasmin Wijnaldum, elaborately sketched patchworks of wool, nylon, and corduroy that are cut, refined, down-filled, and assembled adorn each piece. For the après-ski closet, the line includes an array of knitwear boasting a variety of hand-made details, details achieved by weaving thread on every cross stitch nineteen times to be exact. As for the long-hair alpaca pieces, we consider them the stars of Sorrenti’s show: between the wool coat, the matching shaggy shearling boots, and the fluffy bags, the pieces are extravagantly chicーand they seem softer than the snowy alps.
As for the menswear, diamond, and chevron-quilted ski jackets dominate, their patterns are strongly influenced by the intricate ice formations found dripping off the trees of the slopes. Luxurious patchworks of individually cut panels of well melange, corduroy, and nylon underscore the collection’s stylistic sensibilities, while a variety of specialist equipment, such as skis, helmets, goggles, and gloves, speak to the line’s high-performance vision. And for the Moncler Grenoble crown jewel, global brand ambassador and snowboarding icon Shaun White co-creates the Moncler Grenoble x WHITESPACE snowboard, a phenomenally designed piece of hardware. The board is engineered with a premium wooden core and dual layers of ultra-dense fiberglass and reticulated carbon-filter inserts (for the snowboarding aficionados, we’re sure it’s a plus).
