Naomi Osaka To Launch POC-Oriented Skincare Line

Launching Fall 2021, Kinló is sun protection formulated specifically for darker skin.

Tennis champion Naomi Osaka is expanding her expertise into a new area: skincare. Her upcoming line, Kinló, will focus specifically on sun protection for darker skin.

“What drew me towards this project is having memories of being a kid and not knowing how to protect my skin,” she said in an article by Business of Fashion. “I only started wearing sunscreen recently.”

Kinló, named in honor of Osaka’s Haitian and Japanese roots, will be launched with Los Angeles-based company A Frame brands. Osaka’s goal is to serve the oft-neglected market of POC-friendly sun care —  33 percent of Black people die from melanoma compared to eight percent of white people, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. It’s imperative that darker-skinned people have sun protection formulated specifically for skin with more melanin.

All priced under $20, Kinló’s products will include SPF 40 face lotion with blue light protection, an SPF 50 face lotion made for outdoor activity, an eye cream, a lip balm, and a body spray. Their tinted formula blends without leaving streaky residue. Kinló is set to launch in Fall 2021.

“For me, this project is something that requires more than just being a spokesperson,” said Osaka. “This is a public health need. I used to tell people that I didn’t need to wear sunscreen — but even if you have melanin, you need to take care of your skin, and I am passionate about that,”
