Under Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton’s ads have consistently featured a diverse group of photographers, but with its latest the brand is diversifying their casting, too. One set of the triptych (three imagemakers, one campaign) features video game character Lightning, of Final Fantasy. The illustrated heroine models handbags with her signature pastel pink hair, not too dissimilar from that of fellow Vuitton muse Fernanda Ly. While it's certainly a first, the casting should come as no surprise: fashion is fantasy, after all.
What is surprising though is that another set of the S/S ’16 images, lensed by Bruce Weber, feature a womenswear-clad Jaden Smith amongst a crew of familiar LV faces. The Hollywood scion—and occasional philosopher—has blurred gender lines before by sporting dresses and skirts in the past, so this is par for the course, but less so for a historic brand steeped in tradition. As a true tastemaker, Ghesquière is making it clear that 2016, and the future, will be far from expected.
