If you needed any more proof that the '90s are back in full swing, Nicopanda has served it to us on a silver platter. Their Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear collection was filled with '90s memorabilia — we’re talking quilted leather, oversized jewelry, hip chains, neons, leopard prints, and tracksuits. The subcultural references—goth, grunge, hip-hop, and drag—were also not subtle, which was intentional given the soundtrack, aptly titled “Smells Like Queens Spirit”, that accompanied the runway show.

In the mix, created by DJ Nick Weiss. we’ve got classics from the era like Lil Kim’s "The Jump Off" and Madonna’s "Human Nature" alongside the likes of Marilyn Manson’s "The Beautiful People" and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Of course, there’s some modern references sampled in as well from top artists like Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. There’s also powerful quotes tastefully woven in, like Courtney Love saying “The deal about fashion is that proletariat male rock critics have a real Bruce Springsteen problem with denim boomer issues. We as females have thousands and thousands of years of fashion in our DNA. We want to wear nice fucking clothes—it's part of what we do.” Pure gold.

Nicola Formichetti creating the “Smells Like Queens Spirit” catwalk mix is no surprise given his connection to musicians, including Lady Gaga and Brooke Candy.  What better way to pay homage to a decade infused with such subcultural substance than with a 13-minute mashup of the sounds that best represent the fashion resurgence of the '90s? Listen to the catwalk mix below!
