Nike’s Air Max Day Kicks It up a Notch
Let the festivities begin.
Air Max Day is an annual celebration of Nike’s line of Air Max sneakers that takes place on March 26th, the day the Air Max 1 was first released. Nike drops special limited collaborations leading up to Air Max Day, as well as re-releases of classic models. Earlier this month, Nike announced that this year’s Air Max Day will focus on their “Give Fresh Air” campaign. The project’s main purpose is to propel sneaker culture in a way that will give back to the community. To participate, customers are encouraged to donate new and lightly worn sneakers to retailers throughout the United States and Canada.
First off, Nike is releasing the Air Max 180 BLN exclusively in Berlin. The special version pays homage to the cultural revolution that took place in Berlin during the late ’80s, and reinforces the fact that the shoe is a staple piece in Germany’s capital city.
Air Max Day is branching throughout the continent, as the European retailer size? collaborates with Nike to release an Air Max Light that is branded for a zero gravity feel through an upside-down Nike Air heel logo.
The celebration’s international reach is also seen with the release of the Nike Air Max 97 “Neon Seoul” brought to life by graphic designer Gwang Shin, who won the Nike On Air contest which allowed international creatives the opportunity to create sneakers inspired by their cultures and communities. South Korea’s flag inspired the neon details against the shoe’s black body, and Gwang Shin’s design also draws from Seoul’s lively nightlife.
Tokyo designer Yuta Takuman was also influenced by his home city with his special take on the Air Max 1. Takuman’s “Tokyo Maze” design drew references from Tokyo’s subway lines that disperse throughout the city in a maze-like manner. Takuman’s design was also a part of the Nike On Air contest that was held in conjunction with Air Max Day in 2018.
Nike commemorated the Air Max sneaker line with their launch of the Air Max Throwback Future pack, which features some of the most iconic Air Max styles such as the Air Max 720 and 97.
Collaborations with CLOT, Heron Preston, atmos, and CPFM will see the Air Max 97 Haven, Air Max 720/95, Air Max 2 Light, and Vapormax 2019 reimagined respectively. The new silhouettes will be released beginning in April and continuing into May.
No celebration is complete without prizes, and Nike took note of this by sponsoring the popular live game show app HQ Trivia to offer a $100,000 prize to the winners of today’s game, which will consist of fifteen questions. The game will also feature 100 prizes that “money can’t buy.”
Last but not least, Flight Club’s New York location is giving away every Air Max from 1 to 720 to a lucky customer in celebration of Air Max Day. Anyone who visits between 1pm and 7:20pm wearing a pair of Air Max will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win. The winner will be announced at 7:20pm in the store and will be able to collect the prize at that time.
Mark all the upcoming releases on your calendars and make sure to take part in the festivities that are only happening today.
