Nile Rodgers Fetes Dolly Parton and Jean Paul Gaultier

The Chic songster’s “We Are Family” benefit was a roof-raising surge of good will.

From “I’m Coming Out” to “We Are Family,” the Nile Rodgers songbook is overflowing with dance-floor hits, many of which are undeniably part of party-playlist canon. But when the party is organized by Rodgers himself, as it was last night at the musician’s We Are Family Foundation benefit, the ceiling is just about certain to blow off its hinges. Adding to the rug-cutting revelry at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom was its one-of-a-kind honoree duo: country legend Dolly Parton and fashion game-changer Jean Paul Gaultier

Named for the aforementioned Sister Sledge hit, the We Are Family Foundation reflects Rodgers’s massive network of causes and allies, directing efforts at issues affecting young people today. Parton is the latest to earn its Peacemaker Award, awarded for her career-long philanthropy, which includes literacy- and gender-based advocacy. The singer referenced this philanthropic legacy on stage, touching on her own father’s literacy struggles in her acceptance speech, before belting a rendition of her workplace anthem “9 to 5.”

The event also highlighted beacons of social progress, presenting designer Jean Paul Gaultier with the We Are Family Humanitarian Award. Gaultier also created an exclusive t-shirt design commemorating the event, inspired by his beloved sailor-boy motif.
