Ib Kamara, Off-White’s Creative Director, explores the impact of Black culture has had on America in his Fall/Winter 24 collection for the label. The show, entitled “BLACK BY POPULAR DEMAND”, infuses elements of heritage and modernity that paint a rich vision of Black fashion. Instantly recognizable Off-White staples run throughout the show to innovate while remaining true to Virgil Abloh’s vision. The show’s set was designed to resemble a giant Ludo game board in an effort to bring some fun back to fashion.
Kamara evens the playing field between men and women by making womenswear look bolder and taking a softer approach with menswear looks. The women start the show with silhouettes that cling and fall on the body like no other. The color palette is simple but impactful with hues like black, green, red, and yellow livening up the looks. Fun faux fur coats come in these lively loud colors and add some joy to the more serious womenswear collection. Cheer uniforms get a high fashion spin with multiple dresses and sets melding classic American varsity stripes and traditional African beading.
Menswear looks appear halfway and go fully playful with loud prints and patterns. Stars, dice, and butterflies adorn garments which bring a rare whimsical touch to the serious status quo. The same faux fur carries over from womenswear but shows up in the trims and accessories instead. Men took to the court in this show as most menswear looks took direct inspiration from iconic American sport, basketball. In a unique collaboration with Wilson, Off-White transforms basketball holders into bags and basketballs into special sneakers.
