Ouri Puts Experimental Pop Under the Scalpel in New Album

Ouri stitches in classical elements and future trip-hop to create a body of work pulsing with an eclectic vibrancy.

Waterproof mascara is a must when watching the music video for “Grip,” Ouri’s closing track on her new album Frame of a Fauna out October 22. In the video, directed by Derek Branscombe and Ouri, the composer-turned-DJ receives brain surgery in a hospital chair, the room doused in rainy-day blue. The air swells with her piercingly nostalgic and pastel crooning, as she plucks our heartstrings with each strum of her acoustic guitar.

The metaphorical surgery in “Grip” successfully embodies the core of Ouri’s new album. Frame of a Fauna uses orchestral sound as a scalpel and glitchy techno undertones as a syringe to inflict musical abrasions. She stitches in classical elements and future trip-hop to create a body of work pulsing with an eclectic vibrancy.

Frame of a Fauna travels among different powerful locations for Ouri: the album begins in a bedroom, then leaps to Berlin where she witnessed her sister give birth, and it closes a year later after a sudden trip to Brazil, where she said her last goodbye to her mother.

About her new album, Ouri shares: “Between fragmented souvenirs and sonic explorations, Frame Of A Fauna navigates mutable identity, magnetism and initiating a sense of belonging in an eclectic sound. Mixing classical, field recordings, and electronic and future trip-hop, this album provides a soundtrack to reflect your own shapes and space in this lifetime.”
