As of late, it seems the world has fallen under a curling, glimmering wave of nautical fervor. Just take a glimpse around. From the mermaid core ensembles gushing out at every street corner to the release of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” the sea is the word on everyone’s lips this summer. Jewelry is no exception.
Enter Tiffany & Co. Diving into the sweeping currents of thalassic fashions, the famed jeweler releases its Blue Book 2023: Out of the Blue high jewelry collection. Intricacy, whimsicality, and magnification are all at play here. Note the jellyfish earrings curling with tentacles of glimmering sapphires, tanzanite, moonstones, and diamonds. Their bulbous bells bulge from the ear and into the spotlight with crystalline complexities.
At Tiffany’s, the jellyfish finds itself gracefully leaping from earrings to brooches, necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Much like the water it calls home, the collection’s lavish mélange of stones and 18K gold, too, take on an iridescent sheen of irrefutable charm.
As stunning as the Tiffany jellyfish may be, it is just one of the themes bursting from Nathalie Verdeille’s, Tiffany & Co. Chief Artistic Officer of Jewelry and High Jewelry, latest vision. Akin to the seven seas, there are distinctly seven concepts spearheading the Out of the Blue high jewelry collection: shell, coral, jellyfish, Pisces, starfish, sea star, and star urchin. Each concept explores a different facet of the ocean and its marvel.
The shell explores the three-dimensionality of objects sculpted by the sea. Likewise, the star urchin offers a study in symmetry and form with hand-carved chalcedony that mirrors the jagged texture of its prickly muse. Tangled between glistening opals, aquamarines, tourmalines, and beryls with diamond accents, you’ll find the iconic jeweler’s interpretation of the starfish. In custom-cut mother-of-pearl, the sea star, too, takes form entwined in coral-inspired motifs.
Whereas some of the collection’s themes explore the sea through the Apollonian lens, others interpret its qualities that are near impossible to decipher through the Dionysian lens. Exploring the abstract and fluid wonders of the ocean, Tiffany weaves Pisces into its constellation of themes that transposes the ocean’s enigmatic allure onto magnificent creations, featuring unenhanced Padparadscha sapphires, Umba sapphires, and diamonds. Similar to its zodiacal peer, coral looks at the vibrant hues of marine life and captures them with dazzling sapphires and diamonds.
While the current fervor for everything sea and siren-related could be attributed to the summer’s warmth and Disney’s blockbuster release, they alone cannot take the credit. Stemming from Tiffany’s heritage, the collection’s roots trace back to the legendary jewelry designer Jean Schlumberger.
“With Blue Book 2023, we saw an opportunity to honor Jean Schlumberger’s legacy by giving new life to some of his most celebrated designs,” said Anthony Ledru, Chief Executive Officer of Tiffany & Co. “These creations have a distinct Schlumberger quality and personality to them, but the designs are all new. We are certain that he would have been as pleased with each masterpiece as we are.”
