Patchwork’s Summer Revival Is Sticking Around for Fall

A buzzword at the 2021 Met Gala, patchwork has become one of those long lasting trends.

It’s funky, it’s vintage, it’s one-of-a-kind style, it’s patchwork. Patchwork is one of those trends for which you can’t quite determine the origin. Quilted clothing may have had a landmark decade in the 1970s, but then the trend came back around with a punk twist in the early aughts, and has begun to once again seep its way back into the fashion of today. Long before any of these trendsetting periods, however, patchwork made its debut as far back as medieval times. Clearly deeply ingrained in the history of fashion, it’s no wonder the term itself became a buzzword during the 2021 Met Gala, America: A Lexicon of Fashion. The grande dame of fashion, Anna Wintour herself, said the word at least three times during an interview. Dare we say, this trend is a part of the patchwork of fashion?

On and off the runway—and the beige Met Gala carpet—patchwork has garnered a plethora of quilted enthusiasts. From famed musician Zayn Malik sporting an Emily Bode jacket on the New York streets to actress and director Rebecca Hall donning a custom Batsheva gown patched together with patent leather and printed fabric at the 2021 Met Gala, or Jordan Roth stunning in a collaged jacket with train—patchwork is sewing its way through the fabric of fashion’s A-list. With a wide range of possibilities, patchwork can be worn as a top, bottom, dress, or accessory. Whichever your pick, the quilted style has been around for centuries and does not appear to be leaving any time soon. Plus, Bella Hadid was just seen styling a very ’90s patchwork denim midi skirt in New York. And as trends tend to evolve with the supermodel and fashion icon, if Bella’s wearing patchwork, then the rest of us will surely follow suit (or skirt).
