Photographer and director Renell Medrano’s newest project, ICE magazine, is here. Birthed from her brand, Ice Studios, the magazine takes inspiration from the ‘70s American monthly magazine, Players, which focused largely on Black culture and societal issues featuring Black women.

“While Players was catered to the male gaze, Medrano’s vision for ICE reclaims this aesthetic for women, creating a space where they can see themselves authentically represented,” notes the brand in a statement.
The 28 women featured in the magazine’s inaugural edition responded to an Instagram casting call put out by Medrano. The issue was shot in just two days with the help of the all-woman crew including hairstylist Nikki Nelms, makeup artist Raisa Flowers, and stylist Marika-Ella Ames. Medrano, who is Dominican-American and is from the Bronx, founded Ice Studios in 2021 and has used it as an innovative space to allow her creative ideas flourish. With ICE, Ice Studios is set on inviting people into her creative world while championing those already in it.

ICE’s release is the most recent creation from Medrano’s collaboration with the online platform WeTransfer, having also partnered with the company early this month for the unveiling of her exhibition, LAMBÓN, in New York City. PAMPARA, her first European exhibition, was the first collaboration between Medrano and the We Transfer. Produced in partnership with WePresent, the arts platform of WeTransfer, and designed by Something Special Studios, the debut issue of ICE proudly introduces the ultimate ‘Ice Girl,’ an archetype inspired by the women Medrano grew up around in the Bronx.

Of this partnership between WeTransfer and Medrano, VP of Content at WeTransfer and WePresent, Holly Fraser, said: “We were extremely excited when Renell presented the concept of ICE magazine to us as part of this ongoing collaboration with WeTransfer. We believe that Renell is one of the most innovative voices in photography today; her ability to create work that perfectly speaks to the zeitgeist is a rare talent, and she has once again done this with ICE—subverting a once male focussed aesthetic into something that is authentically her own. ICE is a powerful testament not just to Renell’s talent, but to her understanding of the community that she speaks to. By offering a digital version of the magazine on WeTransfer we hope that other women around the world will also be able to find the Ice Girl in themselves.”
ICE Magazine’s Inaugural issue will be available in limited physical copies and is now available digitally for free download via WeTransfer.
