A new chapter in environmental education begins with the opening of the Sea Beyond Ocean Literacy Center on the island of San Servolo in Venice. Developed by the Prada Group and UNNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and co-designed by CRA- Carlo Ratti Associati, the center is Italy’s first facility dedicated entirely to ocean literacy.

Nestled in the heart of the Venetian Lagoon, this space grants visitors the opportunity to explore the convoluted relationship between humans and the sea. The Center is part of the Sea Beyond initiative, which, since 2019, has progressed with the intent to foster sustainability awareness among young people all across the globe.

The Center’s experience is split across three rooms, following a “macro to micro” scale. If you are lucky enough to visit, you’ll begin with a global oceanic perspective, then narrow in on the unique environment of the Venetian Lagoon, wrapped up by exploring human-scale actions that support marine conservation. Other highlights you’ll see include a 3D Spilhaus Projection map, tactile ecosystem installations, and a science lab for lagoon samples.

People of all ages are encouraged to engage in hands-on activities, audio-visual storytelling, and interactive games. The space was designed with inclusivity and circularity in mind, using sustainable materials and closed-loop water systems. Francesca Santoro of UNESCO-IOC says the Centre builds on the momentum of the 2024 Ocean Literacy World Conference to become a global reference point. Prada Group’s Lorenzo Bertelli adds that the space turns Sea Beyond’s motto – learn, think, act, – into a tangible experience.

In a city on the frontiers of climate change, the center offers not just education, but a call to action. As architect Carlo Ratti notes, “Venice can serve as a laboratory for the future.” Now, with this center, the ocean has a home in the heart of the lagoon.
