The effortless and whimsical collection from Preen by Thornton Bregazzi had two surpriser helpers this year — 12-year-old, Thea, and 8-year-old, Blythe. Parents, Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton we tasked with not only making beautiful clothes for Spring/Summer 2021 but, caring for their beautiful children during a pandemic as well.

Bringing the fun back into designing while quarantined at their spring house in Suffolk, the young sisters joined stayed busy by helping create. The two did everything. Make earrings, drew, dyed, and even draped — the same puffy sleeves noticeably copied in the collection. Keeping fashion alive during the 2020 pandemic, the designers were reintroduced to their roots with the help of their kids. Return to returning to their London studio, with energy, it was an unforeseen obstacle that mills and fabric stores would still be shut down. But, after already finding the fun in collaging, upcycling deadstock materials, and making the most out of everything, the duo grabbed the fabric leftover from other seasons and got to work. Surprisingly, Thornton told Vogue, “The whole collection was made in the studio with just one pattern-cutter, a machinist, one member of staff, us, and the kids.” Magically, the prototypes of earrings made by Blythe and Thea were brought to life by professional, Vicki Sarge of Erickson Beamon.

As a collection that truly came from the heart, it had to be captured as such. Therefore, the film Preen by Thornton Bregazzi: Stitch Me Back Together With Gold was created and features the romantic clothes in the breezy wind. The models are seen arriving at a green oasis by boat, to a location around the canal in Canterbury. The looks are full of movement, ruffles, puff sleeves, cut-outs, and texture.
