Premiere: Jake Troth’s Music Video for “The Queen”

V chatted with the artist about his inspiration for the track, the creative process behind the new video, and what it can offer in a time of crisis.

Most have seen Jake Troth’s name along with hits from Lizzo, Big Boi, Kehlani, and Kevin Gates, of which the singer, songwriter, and producer has been nominated for a Grammy and gone platinum numerous times. His solo track “The Queen” tells the story of his romance with a pop star, and the love song is now accompanied by a sensual and cinematic music video.

“The Queen” comes from Troth’s debut album IT IS AF IF, released in December via Atlantic Records, produced with Grammy-winner Dave Cobb, and recorded in Nashville’s famous RCA Studio A. The track’s new video follows ones previously made for “All Over The World”, “Open Door” and “Alive & Well.”

Head below for all the details on Troth’s video for “The Queen” as V got the chance to chat with the musician.

V Magazine Can you tell us about the inspiration for “The Queen” and the visuals behind it?

Jake Troth I wanted to tell the story of the girl in the song: a wealthy, successful, and famous woman who didn’t need anything from her lover except to feel safe and protected by a deep, nurturing love. That reminded me of the film “The Body Guard” with Whitney Houston, so I cast Dani because her look is so reminiscent of the supermodels from that era. Then my girlfriend and I started to brainstorm about styling and art direction. She came up with referencing the mythical story of Pygmalion (the story of a sculptor falling in love with one of his sculptures which then comes to life) so we put Dani in the statuesque fabric, semi-nude during her “day job” scenes. We then painted her body to reference her being objectified and having to forfeit the comfort of her own skin. The blue we used was inspired by artist Penny Slinger, and then I changed the colors of her hands once I saw how beautiful it looked in the photos by Aida Muluneh.
